June 17th 2003 the Peninsular Rose Club was invited to the garden of John and Jackie Wrinch. The Wrinch's garden is a farm-like setting, with fruit trees, a giant American Walnut tree, grapes, turkeys, Muscovy ducks, Polish chickens, and peacocks in addition to about 300 roses. Weathered farm buildings provide a backdrop, and a tower affords a lookout over the domain. Most of the roses are in a garden laid out around a central lawn, with many metal arches covered with climbers. There is an amazing variety or roses, with an emphasis on Moss, Musk, Hybrid Perpetual, Gallica and other OGRs that are not normally seen in gardens. John reports that after experimenting with other methods, he has settled on overhead watering, confounding the conventional wisdom that the spray will encourage disease. He has little problem with blackspot, and there is no evidence of mildew in the garden.
